Welcome to upLocs! We designed this visualization tool for helping people explore and discover potential locations (states) to launch startups. This tool enables people to quickly review the three-year survival rates of the startups launched in a state in a given year. For example, in 2011, the survival rate of the launched startups in California was 0.60, which means only 60% of startups survived after being launched three years (by 2014).

Our tool also helps users make sense of other relevant information that they might need to consider before launching a startup, such as:

  • Three-year Venture Capital Dollars (average): esitmated based on the dataset shared by State Science & Technology Institute (SSTI);
  • Three-year Research Expenses (average): esitmated based on the Delta dataset shared by Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS);
  • Three-year State Subsidies (average): esitmated based on the dataset shared by Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA);
  • Three-year Number of Institutions (average): esitmated based on the dataset shared by IPEDS;
  • Three-year Annual Income (average): esitmated based on the dataset collected by the U.S. Cluster Mapping Project led by Harvard Business School’s Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness.
  • Click a state! You will see more information.
